Today I’m making a KFC-style fried chicken copycat using a recipe that’s been claimed to come from the family member of Colonel Sanders. According to the story, this is a rumored version of the famous 11 herbs and spices that made KFC so iconic.
Is it the real thing? Nobody knows for sure—but we’re testing it to see how close it gets 👀🍗
Let me know in the comments what you think and whether you’d change anything!

KFC Chicken Copycat Recipe
Ingredients
- 2-3 pounds chicken pieces of your choice
Milk and Egg Wash
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup flour
Spice Mix
- 3 cups cake flour
- 1 TBSP + 1/4 tsp dried sage
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 2 pinches cayenne
- 1/2 tsp coriander
- 1/4 tsp ginger
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 TBSP white pepper
- 1 1/2 TBSP black pepper
- 1 tsp cardamom
- 2 TBSP salt
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour/spice blend. (You will likely not need all of the mix. I stored half in a mason jar for another day!)
- In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, and 1/2 cup flour.
- Add the chicken pieces to the milk and egg mixture.
- Remove one at a time, shaking off excess, and dredge in the flour and spice mixture.
- Heat a few inches of oil in a large skillet to 375 degrees. Fry the chicken pieces 3-4 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.
