Ingredients

For the French Onion Sauce

  • 4 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • For the Chicken Meatballs
  • 1 pound ground chicken or turkey
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 and 1/2 cups shredded gruyere or mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese

Directions

  1. Melt the butter in a high walled skillet over medium low heat. Add the onions, and sprinkle on the salt and sugar. Stir occasionally until golden and caramelized, about 15 minutes. 2. Add the Worcestershire sauce to deglaze the pan, scraping up any brown bits. 3. Add the flour and stir to coat. 4. Pour in the beef stock, as well as the thyme and black pepper. 5. Allow to cook down and thicken, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. 6. Meanwhile, to make the meatballs, combine all ingredients except ground chicken in a large bowl. 7. Add the chicken to the bowl and mix just until everything is incorporated. 8. Using a 1 inch scoop, roll the meatballs and place on a parchment lined sheet pan. 9. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20-25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F. (At this point, you could place the meatballs right on top of the sauce in the skillet, sprinkle on the cheese, and let it melt. I like to make this ahead and bake it as a casserole!). 10. Pour the onion sauce into a greased casserole dish (3 quart). Place the meatballs on top, and sprinkle with the cheeses. 11. Bake at 350 degrees until the cheese is melted and bubbly (alternately, you could broil this to melt the cheese). Serve with egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread!
