Can you believe it’s already the last day of our 12 Days of Christmas Cookies?! I saved the best for last. We are making my Mom’s Sugar Cookies. The recipe we’ve been making and enjoying for many years (before I was even born). They are SO flavorful compared to a lot of other sugar cookies I’ve had, and are crispy on the edges, soft in the center, and topped with a perfectly sweet icing. It’s a fun activity to do with the whole family!

Mom’s Sugar Cookies
My Mom's sugar cookies that we've been making for almost 50 years!
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar (you can sub with lemon juice)
Icing (For Each Color)
- 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
- 1 Tablespoon milk
- drops food coloring
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the egg, vanilla, and almond. Stir to combine.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar (if using lemon juice, add that with the wet ingredients).
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir to combine. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours.
- Roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thick and use cookie cutters to make shapes. Place on parchment lined baking sheets.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees, and bake for 7-8 minutes, or until slightly golden on the edges. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool.
- To make icing, combine the confectioners sugar and milk ,and add in food coloring. If too thick, add a little more milk. If too thin, add a little more sugar.
