There’s nothing more comforting than homemade chicken and dumplings.
This is my go-to recipe: tender chicken simmered in a rich, savory broth with soft, fluffy dumplings made from scratch. It’s simple, hearty, and perfect for cold days or whenever you need real comfort food.
This chicken and dumplings recipe is easy to follow and comes together with simple ingredients you probably already have at home.

Chicken and Dumplings
Ingredients
- 3 TBSP butter
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 cups carrots, diced
- 1 TBSP poultry seasoning
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1/2 TBSP garlic powder
- 1 cup flour, divided
- 40 ounces chicken stock
- salt and pepper
- 1 1/2 pounds chicken, cooked and shredded
- 1 3/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 5 ounces frozen peas
Instructions
- Heat butter in a large dutch oven. Add the onions and carrots. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until softened. Sprinkle in the poultry seasoning, thyme, and garlic powder. Cook for 30 seconds.
- Sprinkle in 1/4 cup flour, and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Stir in the chicken stock, salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce to a simmer. Cover, and cook for 15 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, combine the remaining flour, baking powder, and garlic powder. Stir in the milk to form a wet dough.
- Stir peas into the soup. Drop batter by the spoonful on top of the soup, slightly spaced apart.
- Cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove the lid, cooking an additional 5-10 minutes, or until dumplings are firm to the touch.
